What is in your mind whenever you heard a debate? Some of you might say it is a situation when there are two people arguing or you might thinks it is what couples do every day. Yes it can call a debate. Debate could happen everywhere from parliament building to rusty gate. It is something we do every day. Jonathan Wolfson a lecturer of Lincoln-Douglas Debate course in SciAcademy New Orleans said that debate is comparing and contrasting the ideas. There are formal and informal debates. In formal debate there are parliamentary debate and educational debate. In educational debate means that the debate is carry out the purpose for the sake of knowledge. The major goal is to improve the debaters’ ability in delivering the ideas towards particular issue and looking for the solutions.
When we want to set up a debate first thing first which is very crucial is we have to understand the debate especially when we want to held a debate in academic context. As a specific thing we have to understand from the definition, the stakeholders, the rules, the mechanism and the ethic of the debate. After that it is about the techniques. It includes the space where the debate will be held and logistics like tables and if necessary a podium.
What is the debate? The clue already brought up at the very first place. It is comparing and contrasting the idea because the nature of the debate is to argue for or against the ideas. It means that we argue about the ideas that brought in not the other thing like how unintelligent the other speaker is or how the lack facility in the chamber is. It is the ideas that lay in the argument not the speakers that deliver the argument.
In debating for academic purposes we need a motion. In debate motion means the solution of some problem that has been discussed, and the task of each debater is to discuss whether agree with the solution if you are in government side or against it if you are in opposition side. The solution could be adding new policy, banning, or could be so philosophical like believe or not believe it.
Debating for academic purpose commonly do in schools or universities. In debating for academic purposes have several parties. There are debaters, adjudicator, moderator and time keeper.
Inside the debate the task of the moderator is to conduct the debate, here includes open, close, and invite the speakers to deliver their arguments. When opening the debate the moderator will announce the motion, the name of speakers and adjudicators and when closing the debate the moderator will give the chance to adjudicators to announce their judgement.
Debaters in the debate have to deliver their arguments towards the case and convince the adjudicators that it is the best way to solve the problem. There are two sides of the house, government and opposition. The government must agree with the motion and the opposition side must disagree. Each speaker will be given seven minutes to deliver their argument. The first speaker of government will come first to set up the debate including deliver the definition of the motion and other things such as the assertion, reason, evidence which linked to the motion. It is commonly known as AREL. Then the opposition side should follow the case that brought up by the government.
The race of the debate is the first speaker of government speaks first then the first speaker of opposition will take the role then after that the second speaker of government team will speak, and then the opposition team deliver their argument and so on till the end of the debate.
Each debater will be given a certain times to deliver their speech. It means that there must be someone to watch the time, and that is the task of the time keeper. The time keeper would give the sign to inform the speaker that they already reach particular minute by the knock. The time keeper would knock once after first and sixthminute also knock twice at the seventh minute and continuous knock when the speaker talks over than seven minutes and thirty twenty seconds which means the speaker should end the speech. The time keeper also gives the sign to the opponent that they allowed to deliver their Point of Information after the first minute till the sixth minute.
Inside the debate we need an adjudicator. It could be only one person or more. The task of the adjudicators is very important because they have to decide the winner based on the debaters’ speech. The assessment will be taken from 3 aspects. They are manner, matter, and method. Manner is how they obey the ethic code of debate, matter is the content of their speech and method is the way they convince the judges to pick up their ideas. The percentage of the score usually 20% for manner, 40% for matter and 40 % for method.
When the debate held, it uses one of the parliamentary ways. There are American Parliamentary, Asian Parliamentary, Australian Parliamentary, Canadian Parliamentary and British Parliamentary. Each parliamentary has own debate mechanism.
The things that makes formal of debate is different with any other kind of debate are the rules and the ethics. Each parties and side of the house must honour and obey the ethics. They shall promote the integrity of debate. Alfred Sneider is an assistant Professor of Forensics at the University of Vermont stated that the debaters and the adjudicators should strive to be honest, fair, and respectful of others. Regardless of personal beliefs, judges will base their decisions on the content and conduct of each debate round also the debater must deliver their argument to support their side of the house. Overall, every parties should act with personal integrity and model behavior that advances respect for the activity, the students, and their colleagues.
Next, after knowing all about debate, the next “have-to-do” is about technical things include find the space where the debate will be held and logistics matter such as tables and podium (if necessary). About the space it could be in a room or in an auditorium or even we can do it anywhere just to find a new environment. The matter is the space is enough to have all of the parties who involved in. Tables and podium is not very crucial, it means that we can still have the debate without them. But the story might be different if the situation is in the competition or formal occasion.
Finally the debate for academic purpose is done in the order to develop the knowledge. The debate can carry out by having the knowledge and the information about the debate including the parties, rules and mechanism. The other things that support the debate are the technical matter like room and logistics. Debate could be so much fun if you understand that actually debating just talking about agree or disagree with giving rational reasons and solutions. Therefore there are no reasons to be afraid of having a debate. So let’s debate.

TWILIGHT
About three things I was absolutely positive,
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him and I didn’t know

Who doesn’t know Stephanie Meyer? Stephanie already made the whole world drowning with her Saga’s. Twilight is a young-adult romance novel by author Stephanie Meyer. Twilight as the first instalment of the series that followed with new moon, eclipse, and breaking dawn has brought something new to world. A woman who born at December 24 on 1973 successfully made a new icon of novel franchise. With the unique theme which is called vampire story Stephanie able to attract million eyes to read and drown within the story. Forget any vampire stories you have read before. Twilight is very unique it is almost like its own genre. Stephanie says that the idea of twilight came to her when she was dreaming in 2003 about a vampire who was in love with human girl but thirsted of her blood. The story itself is about forbidden love between a vampire who is Edward Cullen and a human who is Bella Swan. This is very attractive theme for every age even the book is marketed to the teenager, but the adult can enjoy the story as well. The readers will feel curious about how is the story will lead to, how the author draw the vampires, and what is on earth make Edward and Bella could fall in love with each other. Believe me it is kind of book that you do not want to end. In this book Stephanie also describe how the Cullens as a vampire live among the citizen.
Twilight became an instant bestseller when published firstly on October 5 in 2005 in hardback edition. Twilight debuting take the #5 place on the New York times Best Seller List within a month released and successfully taken the #1 place in the end of the year. In 2005 also Twilight was named one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Children Books. No doubt that twilight was also the biggest selling book of 2008. It has been translated into 37 languages.
The story is told by first person from the perspective of Bella, so we as the reader only ever know what she knows. It makes Edward and his family a mystery that is slowly revealed. Bella herself is a well written and realistic character. She is shy and not confident with herself as it noted on the text he said “I didn’t relate well to people my age. Maybe the truth was that I didn’t relate well to people, period. Even my mother, who I was closer to than anyone else on the planet, was never in harmony with me, never on exactly the same page”
The story as it stated it is about Bella and Edward’s romance. Here are the main characters of the story;
Bella Swan
Bella is 17 year old girl who move from sunny Arizona, Chicago to the rainy Forks, Washington because she wants to give her remarried mom and giving a chance to travelling with her husband, so Bella decided to spend her quality time with his father Charlie at Forks who still by himself since they he and Renee get divorced. Bella meets Edward at Forks High School where both go to. At first Bella found Edward as weird good looking guy who always look together with his brothers and sisters except during the class. Bella confessed that she discovered Edward’s who admitted to it. Bella’s personality is different with the other girls. She is really shy, quiet, and not confident girl. She dislike sports because she thinks that her body and her mind always not in the same harmony so sometimes it will ended as unwillingly hurt herself or people around her. Bella is such a curious person to Edward specifically and it is getting higher when Edward saved her at the crush in parking area. As the time flew Edward and Bella fell in each other, but their relationship is disturbed when another vampire James was came and hunt Bella as a sport activity.
Edward Cullen
Edward Cullen is a 104 year old vampire who falling in love with Bella. Edward was transformed into a vampire by Carlisle Cullen who is now his adoption parents because he was dying by Spanish Influenza in 1918. Edward has brothers and sisters they are Rosalie Hale, Jasper Hale, Emmet Cullen, and the last Alice Cullen. Edward has a gift that can read people’s mind. He interested with Bella because Edward couldn’t read her mind. It makes him curious. He also noticed that Bella’s attraction to him going to lead her in dangerous situation. So he was trying to refuse her. Edward considered himself as a very dangerous monster. He made a comparison with the lion, he said “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…”. In this story Edward show his pessimistic personality just like Stephanie’s pessimistic naturally character. Stephanie said that Edward’s character is influenced by Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre who also sees himself as a monster. However Stephanie successfully described his inhumanly beautiful and his attractiveness and made the whole world jealous with Bella.
James
James is a vampire who has an ability to track something whether is human or vampires but mostly he use it to track human for vampire daily needs. He with his the other two people came to the Cullen when they play baseball. At first the Cullen a little bit scary about they will found out that Bella is human but soon after it they know that Bella is a human. The Cullens tries to protect her, and James feels that he find the biggest game in his life, to hunt Bella as a sport. He has a competitive character that always loves challenge. In the end of this novel James is destroyed by the Cullen.
The Cullens took an important role too in this story as a vampire family. Even though they are vampire, they still can live as normal human. The Cullen’s family consist Carlisle Cullen, Esme Cullen, Edward Cullen, Rosalie Hale, Jasper Hale, Emmet Cullen, and the last Alice Cullen. Their role is important because they protected Bella when James hunt her and they are Edward’s family and the most important that they are vampire family.
Twilight is simply and beautiful romance novel. The story is very beautiful written. The description of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the air and hear the rain falling on the roof and yet with the description of the vampire’s life you will feel extremely jealous with Bella. Surely I say that this novel is really interesting, desiring, and everlasting. This is kind of novel that I believe you never want to end.
